Approximately 15 tons of
assorted narcotic drugs were destroyed in Yangon on 23
rd June
2000. The total value is estimated to be US $ 1.34 billion at Hong Kong Street
Prices.

This is the fourteenth occasion on which seized narcotic drugs have been
publicly destroyed and up to now., altogether (45) tons & (31495)litres of
narcotic drugs have been destroyed since 1990, as part of the Myanmar Government
ongoing campaign to totally eradicate narcotic drugs. The Myanmar Government has
Proclaimed the prevention and protection against the menace of narcotic drugs as
a national task, for it is without doubt, the common enemy of mankind.

The burning and destruction of narcotic drugs was witnessed
by high-ranking Government and Military Officials headed by Secretary 1 of the
State Peace and Development Council, Lt.Gen Khin Nyunt, the international
community in Yangon consisting of ambassadors, diplomats, military attaches,
representatives of UN agencies, foreign and local correspondents and invited
guests.

Police Major General Soe Win, Secretary of the CCDAC made a
statement clarifying Myanmar Government’s position and commitment, to combat the
