National Committee on Social Development

The Department is implementing social development programmes

in Asia and Pacific as well as ASEAN member countries. With regard social

development tasks for Asia and Pacific, the Myanmar Delegation headed by

Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement attended the World Summit

for Social Development in Copenhagen, 1995.

The National Report on Social Development was

submitted to

the Conference. In 1997 the Myanmar Delegation headed by Deputy Minister for

Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement also attended the fifth Conference on

Social Development in Asia and Pacific which was held in Manila. The

Department of Social Welfare is carrying out three social development strategies

namely

poverty alleviation, expension of productive employment and social

integration with collective effort of the relevent departments.

Regarding with functional co-operation of social development in ASEAN countries, Myanmar

National Committee on Social Development was formed with the members of

respective departments and social sectors. There are seven sub-committees under the National Committee. The areas of sub-committees are Education,

Health, Youth, Disaster, HIV/AIDS, Women and Labour. The Department arranges 

functional co-operation of social development through seminar, conference,

workshop, training and projects.
