A Myanmar – US joint
study and inspection team carried out narcotic suppression activities in
Triangle Areas Command, Eastern and North Eastern Command areas. The two teams
have cooperated to carry out field works to measure poppy cultivation and to
take samples to estimate actual production, holding discussions with local
community leaders and meeting with the poppy farmers. Col Kyaw Thein led Myanmar
team which included responsible officials of Myanmar Agricultural Service (MAS)
, CCDAC respective Commands. U.S team included representatives of U.S CIA
led by Mr. Stanley Hillard; the State Department; DEA; U.S Department of
Agriculture and the Counter Narcotics Centre.
The Myanmar – U.S
joint teams visited Mongsat, Mongpyin, Naunglai, Kwanlong ( Loi Pinge ) , Lauk
Kaing ( Manle Shoowa ) and Wa Lands in Eastern, Southern and Northern parts of
Shan States and took sample pods out of (102) one meter squares from 34 illegal
poppy fields.
Myanmar and the U.S
governments also had cooperated and jointly undertaken efforts to take samples,
measure and estimate poppy production in the years 1995, 1997,1998 and 1999. Up
to now, there had been a total of (6) joint efforts and cooperation.
