YANGON, 29 Aug – A ceremony to

donate cash for construction of Commemorative Museum for Drug Eradication was

held at the office of Minister for Home Affairs this morning. It was attended by

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs

Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen

Soe Win, officials and well-wishers. Donations were U Myint Kyin Ti, Daw Myint

Myint Kei of Universe Co, Chaatha Construction . Chairman of Central Committee

for Drug abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing accepted the

donations and spoke words of thanks.

get fifteen years

YANGON,29 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of local intelligence unit, Mawlamyine Anti-drug Squad and

Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of U Yut of

Taungpa Village in Mudon Township and arrested U Yut, 55, of Taungpa Village and

Khaing Htane, 46, of the same village together with 209.22 grams of opium,

205.04 grams of low-grade opium, 36.74 grams of opium oil and paraphernalia for

smoking on 4 February.

Kamarwat Myanmar Police Force, Mudon Township, filed them under Sections 15/

19(A)/20(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Mawlamyine

district Court handed down five years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and fifteen

years’ imprisonment under Section 19(A) on U Yut to serve separately and five

years’ imprisonment under Section 15 on Khaing Htane on 9 June.

Stimulant pills seized

in Botahtaung

YANGON, 30 Aug  – A

combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar

Police Force, acting on information, while waiting at the comer of Bogyoke Aung

San Road and Theinbyu Road, arrested Tun Lwin of Monyo Township and Soe Lwin of

Kawa Township, who arrived there to traffick drugs, together with 1,800

stimulant tablets bearing letters “WY” on 5 August. Action has been

taken against them in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances

Law.

accomplices  get imprisonments

YANGON, 28 Aug – A combined

group comprising members of local intelligence unit and Mandalay

Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched stimulant tablets trafficker

Ma Myint Myint Khaing on 82nd Street between 38th and 39th Streets in

Mandalay at 8.20 pm on 1 October 1999.The group found 900 stimulant

tablets weighing 90 grams packed with plastic sheet in her towel.

According to further information, the group nabbed accomplices

Ko Lwin and Daw Hnin Hnin Hlaing. Mandalay No 1 Police Station filed

Ma Myint Myint Khaing,.29, daughter of U Aye Maung of Ooyinsu Village

of Mabein Township, Ko Lwin, 44, son of U Khin Maung Latt of Ward 6, Aungpinle

Region, Chanmyathazi Township and Daw Hnin Hnin Hlaing, 51, daughter

of U Law San of 505/26 of East Yadanabonmi Ward, Mahaaungmye Township

under Sections 15/ 19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances Law.

Mandalay District Court sentenced Ma Myint Myint Khaing to 14 years’ imprisonments

under Sections 19 (A) and accomplices Ko Lwin and Daw Hnin Hnin Hlaing

to 14 years’ each under Sections 19 (A)/21 on 7 August 2000.

Drug traffickers

punished

YANGON, 25 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of local intelligence unit, local battalion, Myitkyina

Anti-Drug Squad and MPF, acting on information, laying in wait at a bus terminal

in Ward 5, Seikmu Village, Phakant Township, Kachin State, searched the fruit

baskets and cabbage bags of Ma Bauk on 15 January 1999.

The authorities found 95 packets of raw opium weighing 142.897 kilos in her

possession.

Further information led to the arrest of Than Swe, Tha Oo and Lukat who were

involved in the drug trafficking.

A case was opened against Ma Bauk, 35, daughter of U Sein Lwutoo, of Edin

Ward, Myitkyina; Than Swe, 51, son of U Chit Soe, South Myoma Ward, Hopin,

Mohnyin Township; Tha Oo, 36, son of U Tin Aung, of the same address and Lukat,

38, son of U Tan Bel, of Konzu Village, Phekhon Township under Section 15/19

(A)/ 21 by Phakant Township Police Station.

Ma Bauk was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and

three years’ imprisonment under Section 15 to serve separately, Lukat to 30

years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/2 1, Tha Oo to 20 years’ imprisonment

under Section 19 (A)/21 and three years’ imprisonment under Section 15 to serve

separately, and Than Swe to 20 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A)121 by

Myitkyina District Court on 20 July 2000.

24 Aug – The Steering Committee for Drug Abuse Control and Southern Wa Region

Development Project held its fourth meeting in Kengtung, Shan State (East) on 23

August.

Present on the occasion were Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse

Control Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, In

Charge of Bangkok based Asia and Pacific Regional Office of United Nations Drug

Control Programme Mr Sandro Calvani, representative5 of Wa Special Region 2 led

by U Pau Laik Kham, General Staff Officer (Grade-l) of Directorate of Defence

Services Intelligence Lt-Col San Pwint, General Staff Officer (Grade-l) of the

Office of Strategic Studies Lt-Col Min Lwin, Deputy Director General of

Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Lt Col Myint Swe,

officials and guests. Speaking on the occasion, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win said the

committee has already held three meetings in Yangon; the assessment committee

has already presented the strong points and weak points; the meeting was held in

Kengtung to ensure convenience of representatives of Wa region. Discussions

should centre on solving problems, drawing of the future programme in accord

with the regional equipment and receiving of funds for the project.

Adviser to the Project Mr John Bruce Dalton reported to the meeting on

accomplishments, and Mr Sandro Calvani on the project appraisal reports. U Pau

Laik Kham and other participants also took part in the discussions.

prison terms

YANGON, 24 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of the local intelligence unit, Myitkyina Anti drug Squad and

Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting near Nan Gway

Station, searched a car with number plate Bha/ 3360 and arrested San Kyi, 39,

and San Yee of Khaymarthi Ward, Myitkyina together with 8 packets of Ephedrine

weighting 98 kilos at 6.45 pm on 16 February.

On further investigation, the authorities arrested Ohn Maung (a) Ohn Para Sap

of Khaymarthi Ward, Naw Hlaing (a) Min Chan, 40, of Kachinsu Ward, Myitkyina,

Kyaw Swa, 26, of Dugaung Ward, Taning, Hla Myint, 46, of Ponkhon Ward, Taning,

and Majila (a) Mutu, 35, of Mahaaungmyay Township, Mandalay for their

involvement in the case. The No 2 Myitkyina Police Force filed them under

section 15/16(B)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

The Myitkyina District Court handed down ten years’ imprisonment under

Section 16 (B) on San Yee, San Kyi, Naw Hlaing (a) Min Chan, Kyaw Swa, Hla Myint

and Majila (a) Mutu and ten years’ imprisonment under Section 16 (B) and three

years’ imprisonment under Section 15  on Ohn Maung (a) Ohn Para Sap to

serve separately on 24 June 2000.

330 drug-related cases

exposed in July

YANGON, 22 Aug – The Tatmadaw,

the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 330 drug-related

cases in July.

The authorities seized 41.8319 kilos of opium in 30 cases, 5.2188 kilos of

heroin in 129 cases, 476.1257 kilos of opium oil in three cases, 3.9922 kilos of

low-grade opium in 16 cases, 38.9149 kilos of marijuana in 59 cases, 9.47 liters

of Phensedyl in five cases, 244,147’stimulant tablets in 37 cases, 13.349 kilos

of chemical powder, one litre of methadone in one case, 0.0327 kilo of stimulant

powder in one case, 37 cases for failure to register and 12 other cases.

The Tatmadaw regiments and units seized 8,900 stimulant tablets in 21 cases.

The MPF also seized 10,3184 kilos of opium in 21 cases, 1.2769 kilos of heroin

in 103 cases, 0.0201 kilo of opium oil in two cases, 3.5522 kilos of low-grade

opium in 16 cases, 37.2754 kilos of marijuana in 57 cases, 1.24 liters of

Phensedyl in one case, 135,339 stimulant tablets in 26 cases, 13.349 kilos of

chemical powder, 0.0327 kilo of stimulant powder in one case, 37 cases for

failure to register and 12 other cases.

Seizures by the Tatmadaw and the MPF were 31.5135 kilos of opium in nine

cases, 3.9419 kilos of heroin in 26 cases, 476.1056 kilos of opium oil in one

case, 0.44 kilo of low-grade opium, 1.6395 kilos of marijuana in one case, 8.23

liters of Phensedyl in four cases, 99,908 stimulant tablets in 10 cases and one

litre of methadone in one case. Action was taken against 465 culprits 376 men

and 89 women in 330 cases in July.

Among drug-related cases in July, a combined team, acting on information,

searched heroin trafficker U Yan Wai Phyint and U Aung Phu at the corner of

Thissa and Naungpyat Village Roads in Ward 4 in Kutkai Township on 20 July.

The team seized 1.08 kilos of heroin kept in soap boxes in the knapsack of U

Yan Wai Phyint and one M-20 pistol, one magazine and five rounds of ammunition

from U Aung Phu. Kutkai Police Station took action against U Yan Wai Phyint and

U Aung Pyu and persons of drug-related case Daw Ashan and Daw Ai Kyin.

On 23 July, a combined team searched a car with number plate 2Ka/1128 driven

by Min Naing leaving from Mongshu to Lashio at Tangyan Junction. The authorities

nabbed passenger Ma Hu Kyein Phaw with 0.0082 kilo of opium oil cake. Yan Dai

Cho, who was fellow of her, escaped. After arresting Yan Dai Cho, the team

members seized 12 packets of opium weighing 20.9841 kilos and seven opium 

cakes weighing 0.5716 kilo from them. Lashio Police Station took action against

them by law.

On 24 July, a combined team searched the house of Ar Kway in Magyibin Village

of Banbway Villagetract, Taunggyi Township. They seized WY brand 115,000

stimulant tablets, whitish chemical powder 4.899 kilos, blackish chemical powder

8.49 kilos and two cycles. Taunggyi Police Station-l took action against him.

Drug trafficker gets 20

years’ imprisonment

YANGON, 21 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of the local intelligence unit and local police force, acting

on information, searched a van with number plate Tha/4127 on Nyaung-bin Village

Road in Pinlaung Township at 8 pm on 7 March.

They seized 10 packets of opium weighing 15.513 kilos from the knapsack of

passenger Ta Kee. Pinlaung Police Station took action against Ta Kee, son of U

Pan Tee of Ta-khaukkhun Village, Nyaung-kyaw Villagetract, Hsihseng Township,

under the Section 15/19(A)of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Taunggyi West District Court sentenced the drug trafficker to 20 years’

imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on 15 June 2000.

Marijuana possessor

gets 30 years

YANGON, 19 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon Special Anti-Drug

Squad, acting on information, searched Than Hlaing on Bayintnaung Road in Ward 5

of Mayangon Township on 7 October 1999 and seized 1.388 kilos of marijuana.

Action was taken against Than Hlaing (a) Jim Brown, 32, son of U Maung Sein

of 293, Nila 6th lane, Ward 8, North Okkalapa Township, under Section 15/ 19 (A)

of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Mayangon Police

Station. The Yangon West District Court handed down 25 years’ imprisonment under

Section 19 (A) and five years’ imprisonment under Section 15 on him to serve

separately on 31 July 2000.

YANGON, 17 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of the local intelligence unit and local Myanmar Police Force

personnel, acting on information, while waiting at 82nd Road, between 28th and

29th Streets, Mandalay searched Ma Aye Aye Win, 40, of Chanayethazan Township,

and arrested her together with 78.25 grams of heroin at 10 am on 3 December

1999. The No 8 Police Station, Mandalay, filed her under section 15/19 ( A) of

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Mandalay District Court

handed down fifteen years’ imprisonment under Section l9′(A) on her on 1 Aug

2000.

YANGON, 15 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Kengtung Anti-drug Squad,

acting on information, searched the house of Yaloh, 37, of Kunpoke Village in

Mongngwan Villagetract and arrested his mother Daw Mi Ae, 67, together with

1.078 kilos of opium at 9 am on 2 May 2000.

The Kengtung Police Force filed Daw Mi Ae and Yaloh under section 15/19

(A)120 (A)/ 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Kengtung

District Court handed down five years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and

four years’ imprisonment under Section 15 on Daw Mi Ae to serve concurrently and

fifteen years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/21 and tour years’ imprisonment

under Section 15 on Yaloh to serve separately on 16 June 2000.

gets 25 years

YANGON, 11 Aug – A combined team

including members of Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched

the house of Myint Maung at 474/A on Aungthukha Road in Ward 8, Hlinethaya

Township, at 12.35 pm on 29 January and seized 410.26 grams of marijuana.

Hlinethaya Police Station filed Myint Maung,30, son of U Tun Hla, under Section

15/ 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon North

District Court sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on

23 June 2000.

YANGON, 10 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of the local intelligence unit and local station, acting on

information, searched the house of Aiklon, 40, of Tawkothnine Village in

Tachilek Township and arrested him together with 101,600 stimulant tablets

bearing the word “WY” on 10 February 2000. The Tachilek Police Station

filed Aiklon under section 15/l9(A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances Law. The Tachilek District Court handed down twenty years’

imprisonment under section 19 (A) on him on 12 July.

Drug traffickers get life imprisonment

YANGON, 4 Aug – A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local police force, acting on information, searched the house of Thet Way, aged 40, son of U Ohn Maung, of No 365, Meeset Street, Nankhe Ward, Thaton, on 6 April 2000, and arrested him together with two packets of marijuana weighing 326.54 grams hidden underground. 

The authorities also nabbed Kyaw Tun (a) Kyaw Myo Tun, aged 25, son of U Hla Myint, of Natkyun Kyongyi Street, Lake-in Ward, Thaton, who was together with Thet Way at the house. 

The two culprits were tried under Section 15/19 (A)/20 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Thaton Myoma Police Station. They were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and life imprisonment under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Thaton District Court on 30 June 2000.

Drug trafficker gets 20

years’ imprisonment

YANGON, 1 Aug – A combined team

comprising members of local intelligence unit and local MPF, acting on

information, searched Aye Kywe, 40, son of U Hla Din, of Nyaungon Village, Hlegu

Township, on the highway near Tahsudaung Pagoda, Ngahsudaung Village, Hlegu

Township, on 20 February 2000, and arrested him together with eight packets of

smoked opium weighing 245.96 grams. He was tried under Section 15/19 (A) or

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances law by Ngahsudaung Police Station. He

was sentenced to 24 years’ imprisonment on 1 June 2000 under Section 1 (A) of

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances law by Yangon North District Court.
