256 drug-related cases exposed in September
Yangon,
30 Oct – The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department
exposed 256 drug-related cases in September 2001. Among the seizures were
728.5672 kilos of opium in 33 cases, 14.084 kilos of heroin in 109 cases, 1.38
kilos of morphine, 3.3269 kilos of opium oil in four cases, 41.8577 kilos of
low-grade opium in 13 cases, 18.1257 kilos of marijuana in 24 cases, 151.6
litres of phensedyl in three cases, 4,788,402 stimulant tablets in 52 cases,
0.004 kilo of stimulant powder in one case, 8.4 litres of cough syrup in one
case, 132.839 litres of chemical liquid of morphine injection in one case, 216
other tablets in one case, 12 cases for failure to register and two other cases.
Action was taken against 361 persons 299 men and 62 women in connection with
256 drug- related cases in September 2001.

Drug trafficker sentenced

combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Lashio Special
Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched Thura (a) Kalagyi, who was
travelling on No 132 down train en route from Lashio to Mandalay at 9.25 am on
28 June. The authorities seized 488.81 grams of heroin kept in 25 soap-cases
carried together with him. The police station concerned filed Thura (a) Kalagyi,
21, son of U Tun Myint of Zone (4), Ward (7) in Mawthiri under Section 15/19 (A)
of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Lashio District Court on
7 September handed down 5 years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and 20 years’
imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on him to serve separately.

First Workshop on Enhancing Life Skills/Social Competence
in Preventive Drug Education in South-East Asia opens
Yangon, 29 Oct –
The opening ceremony of First Workshop on Enhancing Life Skills/Social
Competence in Preventive Drug Education in South-East Asia, jointly sponsored by
Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme and the Central Committee for Drug Abuse
Contorl of Myanmar was held at the Traders Hotel here this morning.
It was attended by Secretary of CCDAC Myanmar Police Force
Director-General Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, departmental officials who are members
of work committees, Director of DAP Mr Tay Bian How and First Secretary Ms
Bernadette Siely of the Australian Embassy and guests. First, Police Maj-Gen Soe
Win delivered a speech.
He said that Myanmar is cooperating in drug abuse control
with United Nations Drug Control Programme, ASEAN countries and Colombo Plan
DAP. Myanmar will be able to cooperate all the more in future. Afterwards, Ms
Bernadette Siely and Mr Tay Bian How made speeches. Then, the ceremony came to a
close. A total of twenty trainees from Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the
Phillipines and Vietnam are attending the workshop, which will continue till 2
October.

Marijuana seized in Toungoo
Yangon,
26 Oct – A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police
Force, acting on information, searched No 2 Down-train bound for Yangon at
Toungoo Station and arrested Min Min Soe and Pho Phyo together with 1.858 kilos
of marijuana at 11.30 pm on 12 June this year. The police station concerned
filed a law suit against the two, Min Min Soe, 19, son of U Tin Maung, Pho Phyo,
19, son of U Myint Oo, of Botningone Village, Toungoo Township under section
15/19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Toungoo
District Court handed down fifteen yearÕs imprisonment each on them under
Section 19 (A) on 30 August 2001.

Drug traffickers sentenced
Yangon, 25 Oct –
A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon
Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched Super Guest House in
Nantthagone Ward, Insein Township, on 11 April evening, and seized 2,400
stimulant tablets weighing 326.4 gms from Soe Win and Si Thu who were putting up
there.
Insein Police Station filed Soe Win, 39, son of U Tun Shein
of Aungmingalar 4th Street, Aungmingalar Ward, Hlegu Township, and Sithu, 24,
son of U San Lwin of 120th Street, Mingalar Taungnyut Township under Section
15/19(A)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon
(North) District Court heard the case and handed down 20 years’ imprisonment
under Section 19 (A) on Soe Win and 20 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/
21 on Sithu on 3 September.

Drug trafficker sentenced
Yangon, 23 Oct –
A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Lashio Special
Anti-drug Squad, after getting information, searched the house of Ma Khin Pyone
Yi (a) Ma Shoungshu of No 2/61, Nilar Street, Zone 2, Gange Ward in Lashio
Township and seized 8316 stimulant tablets under a blanket at 3.30 pm on 15
March. The Lashio No 1 Police Station filed Ma Khin Pyone Yi (a) Ma Shoungshu,
45, daughter of U Shauk Shan, under Section 15/19(A) of Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Law. The Lashio District Court handed down 15 years’
imprisonment on her under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances Law on 22 August.

Drug trafficker gets 20 years
Yangon,
16 Oct – A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and
Yangon Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of
Kyaw Oo of plot No 447, Dagon Seikkan Township, and seized 2.286 kilos of
marijuana at 3.30 pm on 26 October 2000. The South Dagon Police Station filed
Kyaw Oo, 35, son of U Aung Thein of Nyaungwaing village, Kyauktaga Township,
under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The
Yangon East District Court handed down 20 years’ imprisonment on him under
Section 19(A) on 27 September 2001.

Drug trafficker gets prison terms

12 Oct – A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Lashio Special
Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched a house of Shwe Win (a) Ai Main
at the corner of 24th and 37th Streets, Ward 5, Lashio, on 18 March 2001 and
seized 166.1 grams of heroin which were kept in ten soap containers. No 1 Police
Station of Lashio filed him under Section 15/19(A) of Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Law. Lashio District Court handed down five years’
imprisonment under Section 15 and 15 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on
him to serve seperately on 2 August.

1.92m stimulant tablets seized in Kengtung
Yangon,
5 Oct – Kengtung District Court handed down prison terms on five people for drug
trafficking on 4 September this year. A combined team comprising the local
intelligence unit and Kengtung Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information,
stopped and searched a ten-wheeled truck with number plate 2Kha/3952 and seized
1,920,000 stimulant tablets bearing the letters “WY” on 2 January 2001. Kengtung
Police Station filed driver Zaw Win, 30, son of U Ko Lay of No 41, Hintha
Street, Kantha Ward, Taunggyi, Tun Yee, 28, son of U Maung San of Mante Village,
Bahmo Township, Aung Zaw Min, 22, son of U Than Myint of Wapya Ward, Kyauggyisu,
Taunggyi, manager of the truck Sai Nyi, 56, son of U Khe Hsai of No 136,
Yayayekwin Ward, Taunggyi, and Win Myint, owner of the truck, 44, son of U Paw
San, No 40, Kyaingin Ward, Ward 5, Kengtung, under Section 15/19(A)21 of the
Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Kengtung District Court heard
the case and sentenced Zaw Win to 15 years’ imprisonment under Section 19(A),
Tun Yee, Aung Zaw Min and Sai Nyi to life imprisonment under Section 19(A) and
Win Myint to life imprisonment under Section 19(A)21.

281 drug-related cases exposed in August

exposed 281 drug-related cases in August 2001. Seizures made by Customs
Department were 288.5673 kilos of opium in 45 cases, 21.3388 kilos of heroin in
84 cases, 2.3385 kilos of opium oil in six cases, 2.5143 kilos of low-grade
opium in 14 cases, 11.3291 kilos of marijuana in 28 cases, 10.864 litres of
Phensedyl in three cases, 3,751,045 stimulant tablets in 55 cases, four kilos of
Ephedrine in one case, 83.2 kilos of stimulant powder in one case, eight litres
of cough syrup in one case, 18 kilos of caffeine in one case, 1.59 kilos of
opium paper in three cases, 107 bottles of morphine injection in one case,
327.312 litres of Acetic Anhydride in one case, 2718.508 litres of chemical
liquid in two cases, 12.9 kilos of chemical powder in one case, 675 kilos of
Phenyl Acetic Acid in one case, 30 cases for failure to register and 8 other
cases.
Seizures by the Tatmadaw were 46.8045 kilos of opium in 7
cases, 2.5659 kilos of heroin in three cases, 0.55 kilos of low-grade opium in
one case and 53,434 stimulant tablets in four cases. Seizures made by the
Myanmar Police Force were 241.7628 kilos of opium in 38 cases, 18.7729 kilos of
heroin in 81 cases, 2.3385 kilos of opium oil in six cases, 1.9643 kilos of
low-grade opium in 14 cases, 11.3291 kilos of marijuana in 28 cases, 10.864
litres of Phensedyl in three cases, 3,697,611 stimulant tablets in 51 cases,
four kilos of Ephedrine in one case, 83.2 kilos of stimulant powder in one case,
eight litres of cough syrup in one case, 18 kilos of caffeine in one case, 1.59
kilos of opium paper in three cases, 107 bottles of morphine injection in one
case, 327.312 litres of Acetic Anhydride in one case, 2718.508 litres of
chemical liquid in two cases, 12.9 kilos of chemical powder in one case, 675
kilos of Phenyl Acetic Acid in one case, 30 cases for failure to register and 8
other cases. Action was taken against 436 persons 372 men and 64 women in
connection with 281 drug-related cases in August 2001

Drugs traffickers get life

1 Oct – Members of local intelligence unit and Kengtung Special Anti-drug Squad,
acting on information, stopped and searched a ten-wheeled car with number plate
3 Kha/ 5930 driven by Sa Tit (a) Ei Sa and found 709,000 pink stimulant tablets
in secret rooms in water tank and oil tank of the car at Naung Non check point
in Kengtung on 2 January. Action has been taken against Sa Tit (a) Ei Sa, 45, of
Gyobyu Street in Kantha Ward, Taunggyi, Conductor Khin Maung Gyi, 30, of Daw No
Two Ward in Loikaw, Car Manager Sai Nyi, 56, of Yay Aye Kwin Ward in Taunggyi
and Owner Win Myint, 44, of Ward 5 in Kengtung under Narcotics and Psycotropic
Substances Law by Kengtung Police Station. Kengtung District Court handed down
15 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on Sa Tit (a) Ei Sa, life
imprisonments under Section 19 (A) Khin Maung Gyi and Sai Nyi, and life
imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/ 21 on Win Myint on 4 September.
