Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Police Maj-Gen Soe Win

together with Resident Representative of United Nations Drug Control Programme

Mr Jean Luc Lemennieu, Assistant Resident Representative Mr Gulliume Le Hegret,

Additional Secretary of CCDAC Police Col Kham Aung and officials arrived at

Shwepyitha Youth Rehabilitation Centre, Wethtikan, Pyay Township, Bago Division,

yesterday noon. Police Maj-Gen Soe Win explained the purpose of inviting the

officials of UNDCP to the centre. Then, Police Col Kham Aung briefed them on

history of the centre and efforts for eradication of narcotic drugs abuse in

Myanmar. The officials replied queries raised by the resident representatives.

The Police Maj-Gen and the representatives visited the trainees of the centre at

their hostels, and inspected the ward, library of Social Welfare Department,

lathe workshop, agriculture, livestock breeding and rice milling machine of

Science and Technology Department and intensive care ward.

 

 

Drug trafficker gets 15

years

Yangon, 28 Feb –

A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Muse Special

Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched a trawler-Jeep (Ma Sa/434) at

105th-Mile check-point on 10 September 2000 and arrested drug owner Ma Aye Ain

together with 300 kilos of raw opium. Action was taking against Ma Aye Ain, 50,

daughter of U Wan San, Tema Village in Muse under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic

Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Muse District Court handed down 3 years’

imprisonment under Section 15 and 12 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on

her on 21 December 2000 to serveseparately.

Drug dealer gets 15

years

Yangon, 27 Feb – A team

comprising members of local intelligence unit and Tachilek Special Anti-Drug

Squad, acting on information, searched the farm hut of Aik Phone, 50, at the

bank of Maehok Creek in Tachilek Township and found 500 grams of raw opium and

45 stimulant tablets on 9 September 2000. The Tachilek Township Police Force

filed a lawsuit against him in accord with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances Law. The Tachilek District court handed down three years’ 

imprisonment under Section 15 and 12 years’  imprisonment under Section 19

(A) on him to serve separately on 29 December 2000.

Woman drug dealer gets

15 years

Yangon, 26 Feb –

A team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon Special

Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Daw Aye Myint, 69,

of Ward 7, Hlinethaya and found 326.6 grams of marijuana on 3 June 2000. The

Hlinethaya Township Police Force filed a lawsuit against her in accord with the

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon North District court

handed down three years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and 15 years’

imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on her to serve separately on 5 January 2001.

Two women and one man

jailed for drug trafficking

YANGON, 23 Feb – The Kalay

District Court punished two women and one man, giving 25 years’ imprisonment

each to them for trafficking heroin on 29 January this year.

A combined team comprising the members of local intelligence unit and local

Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, at the corner of Bogyoke Street and

Wayzayanda Street, stopped and searched Ma El Mar Lay and Ma Lwe Lun, who were

on a bicycle, and seized 12.16 grams of heroin on 27 November 1999. Further

information led to the arrest of Soe Pay. The Kalay Police Station took action

against Ma El Mar Lay, 17, daughter of U Gin t Shin Tan of Block 14, Panlong

Ward, Kalay, Ma Lwe Lun, 19, daughter of U Neimt Kham Paung of Block 8, the same

ward and.Soe Pay, 21, son of U Hla Maung of Block 14, the same – ward under

Section 15/19 (A) 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The

Kalay District Court heard the case and sentenced the trio to 25 years each in

prison under Section 19 (A).

3,535 drug-related

cases exposed in year 2000

Yangon, 19 Feb – The Tatmadaw,

the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 3,535 drug-related

cases in year 2000. Action was taken against 4,881 person 3,979 men and 902

women in 3,535 cases. In Year 2000, Tatmadaw regiments and units seized narcotic

drugs, chemicals and paraphernalia at three opium refineries in Shan State

(North). A total of 8,919.4 acres in Shan State (North), Shan State (South),

Kachin State, Kayah State, Chin State and Mandalay Division have been destroyed

till 31 January in 2000-2001 opium poppy cultivation season.

Drug trafficker gets 20

years

Yangon, 19 Feb – Members of the

local intelligence unit and local Police Force, acting on information searched

the house of Myint Win, 39, of Shantegyiauk Village in Dagon Myothit (East) at

6.30 am on 19 October 1999. The authorities found 245 grams of marijuana and

filed a lawsuit against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances Law. The Yangon East District Court handed down 20 years’ 

imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on him on 15 January 2001.

95,000 stimulant

tablets seized in Lashio

Yangon, 14 Feb – A combined team

comprising members of local intelligence unit and Lashio Special Anti-Drug

Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Aik Maung in Ward 12, Lashio,

on 2 August 2000 and arrested Sai San Win, 27, son of U Shwe Kyaung of Ward 2,

Nanzalat Village, Hsenwi Township and Kyaw Hla (a) Hla Kyaw, 24, son of U Ywet

Khan, of Ward 12, Lashio who were at the house together with 95,000 WY brand

stimulant tablets weighing 8.55 kilos. Aik Maung, owner of the house, managed to

escape during the bust. Action was taken against the two under Section 15/19

(A)/21 of Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law. The two were sentenced

to 25 years’  imprisonment each under Section 19 (A) by Lashio District

Court on 25 January 2001.

Yangon, 13 Feb-Members of the

local intelligence unit and local Myanmar Police Force, acting on information,

searched the house of Naw Bi Faw, 46, of Myetnikwin Village, Khingyi

Village-tract in Phyu Township and found 4.735 grams of marijuana hidden in the

bushes of the compound at 4 pm on 6 December 2000. Action was taken against her

in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Taungoo

District Court handed down 20 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on her on

26 January.

Drug traffickers get

life sentence

Yangon, 11 Feb – Myeik District

Court handed down a life sentence each on five men for drug trafficking on 22

January this year. A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence

unit, Kawthoung Anti-Drug Squad, Special Investigation Department, Criminal

Investigation Department, Bureau of Special Investigation Department and Myanmar

Police Force, acting on information, at 6.30 am on 5 October 2000, searched a

motor boat which stopped at U Than Htaik Bridge in Inlay Myaing Ward, Myeik, and

arrested five men together with 3.5 litres of Phensedyl and one litre of

Phencodine. Myeik Police Station opened the case against Ko Win (a) Soe Win, 35,

son of U Po Kyin, of Sakhanthit Village, Kyunsu, Aung Naing, 32, son of U Ba Thi,

of Inlay Myaing Ward, Myeik, Aung Mya Wai (a) Htawt Nge, 24, son of U Aung Thin,

of Myothit, Myeik, Khin Zaw, 24, son of U Win Myint, of Naukle Ward, Myeik, and

Tin Tun Oo, 30, son of U Maung Hsin, of Kanphya Ward, Myeik, under Section 15/19

(A)/20 (B)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Myeik District

Court heard the case and sentenced Ko Win (a) Sow Win and Tin Tun Oo to 15

years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and to life imprisonment each under Section

19(A) to serve separately and Aung Naing, Aung Mya Wai (a) Htawt Nge and Khin

Zaw to life imprisonment each under 19(A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances Law.

Drug traffickers get

25, 30 years

Yangon, 7 Feb –

Members of the local intelligence unit and local Myanmar Police Force, acting on

information searched two men at Ward 5 in Mayangon Township on Dhammapala Street

at 7 pm on 2 February 2000. The authorities found 265.35 grams of marijuana on

Tin Aye (a) Hmat Gyi, 31, of Dhammapala Street and Zaw Nyi Nyi Aung, 21, of Pan

U Yin Street of the same township. Action was taken against the two in accord

with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon West District

Court handed down five years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and 25 years’

imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on Tin Aye to serve separately, and 25 years’

imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on Zaw Nyi Nyi Aung on 6 December.

seized in Muse

Yangon, 6 Feb –

A team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local Police Force,

acting on information, while waiting at the corner of Asoka and Namkham Streets,

Kaungmu Ward, Muse in Shan State (North), searched Aik Maung and Sai Thein Nyunt

of Manwein Kwetthit, Muse and found 587 grams of heroin kept in 43 plastic

sachets on 19 January. Action was taken against them in accord with Narcotic

Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Drug pusher gets 25 years

Yangon, 5 Feb –

A team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local Police Force,

acting on information, searched Kyaw Tun Naung, 42, of Ward 6, PyinOoLwin

Township, Mandalay Division at the office of Ward 6 Peace and Development

Council in Latha Township and found 21.9 grams of heroin kept in 17 penicillin

bottles on 29 July morning. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic

Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon West District Court handed

down 5 years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and 25 years’ imprisonment under

Section 19 (A) on him on 22 December 2000 to serve separately.
