194 drug cases exposed in December

Yangon, 30 Jan –

The Tamadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Departments exposed 194

drug-related cases in December 2001. Seizures made by them were 10.066 kilos of

opium in 16 cases, 2.1473 kilos of heroin in 67 cases, 0.0443 kilo of opium oil

in three cases, 39.6223 kilos of low-grade opium in 15 cases, 2.9495 kilos of

marijuana in 19 cases, 23.06 litres of Phensedyl in three cases, 469,593

stimulant tablets in 45 cases, 1,200 kilos of Ephedrine, 0.0032 kilo of

stimulant power in one case, 6,819 litres of Acetic Anhydride, 38312.734 litres

of chemical liquid in two cases, 1,877 kilos of chemical powder, nine cases for

failure to register and 14 other cases.

Tatmadaw members seized 5.5766 kilos of opium in two cases,

0.0003 kilo of heroin in one case, 32.6586 kilos of low-grade opium, 220

stimulant tablets, 6,819 litres of Acetic Anhydride, 38312.734 litres of

chemical liquid in two cases and 1,877 kilos of chemical powder. MPF members

seized 4.4894 kilos of opium in 14 cases, 2.147 kilos of heroin in 66 cases,

0.0443 kilo of opium oil in three cases, 6.9637 kilos of low-grade opium in 15

cases, 2.9495 kilos of marijuana in 19 cases, 23.06 litres of Phensedyl in three

cases, 469,373 stimulant tablets in 45 cases, 0.0032 kilo of stimulant powder in

one cases, nine cases for failure to register and other 14 cases.

Action was taken against 281 persons 228 men and 53 women. On

9 December, a combined team comprising members of Anti-Drug Squads searched a

car, driving along the Panhsai-Mongla Road to Wontapin Station and seized

448,000 stimulant tablets bearing the words “WY”. Kengtung Police Station filed

driver Chaihwar, Sihon and Sanmar Ngin under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances Law. A combined group comprising members of Anti-Drug Squads, acting

on information, searched a passenger bus with number plates Bha/7255 at Nant-hoi

Village, Panhsai Township and seized Twam Chint Che together with 1.587 kilos of

heroin. On further investigation, Yan San and Kyan Lauk Yon were arrested.

Action was taken against them by the Muse Police Station.

Drug traffickers get 15 years each

Yangon, 30 Jan- A combined team comprising members of local

intelligence unit and Bago Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, halted and

searched a passenger bus with number plates 9 Ka/3998 coming from Loikaw and

seized Tin Win and Min Min together with 2.7 kilos of marijuana at the toll gate

of Bago on 2 March, 2001. In connection with the case, Bago Police Station No 1

took action against Tin Win, 46, son of U Kan Ya of Thayatkon Village, Lewe

Township and Min Min, 23, son of U San under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs

and Psychotropic Substances Law. Bago District Court handed down 15 years’

imprisonment each on them under Section 19 (A) on 6 December 2001.

Drug trafficker sentenced

Yangon, 25 Jan –

A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Taunggyi

Special Anti Drug Squad, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of Daw Khite

Laung in Sailian Ward, Monghsu and seized 299 gm of heroin on 29 May 2001.

Loihsaunghtauk Police Station filed a law suitagainst Daw Khite Laung, 50,

daughter of U Aik Tun, under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and

Psychotropic Substances Law. The Loilem District Court handed down a sentence of

five years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and 25 years’ imprisonment under

Section 19 (A) on her to serve separately on 6 December 2001.

Drug control measures co-ordinated

19 Jan – A coordination meeting on cooperation of Myanma-Thai narcotic drugs

control works was held at the office of Tachilek anti-drugs (special) squad in

Tachilek yesterday aftrnoon. It was attended by Myanmar delegation led by

Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and

Thai delegation led by General Secretary of Thailand Narcotic Drug Control Mr

Kitti Limchaikit.

 At the meeting, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win mentioned that

cordial discussions with leaders of Thailand were made during the goodwill visit

of the delegation led by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt to Thailand and the visit of CCDAC Chairman Minister for Home

Affairs to ministerial-level drug control meeting of Myanmar, China, Laos and

Thailand held in Beijing in August 2001. As a result, Wa region development plan

has been co-ordinated between the two countries. The two delegations visited

Yawngkha village at 9 am today and discussed regional development tasks with Wa

national race leader U Pauk Yuyi. They left the village at 10 am.

Ephedrine powder seized in Mandalay

combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police

Force and departments concerned, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of Daw

Aeh Swe, daughter of U Law Pi of 58th Street, Ahhneiktaw Ward, Aungmyethazan

Township, Mandalay, on 6 January and seized 157 kilos of ephedrine powder. On

further investigation, two drug-owners, Ma Saw Yu Khine (a) Ma Nwe Ni Khine,

daughter of U Soe Khine of Room-3, Building-5, Aungnan Yeiktha, Chanayethazan,

Township Mandalay, and Myint Oo (a) Maung Maung, son of U Soe Khine of No 36/B,

Mingyi Yanlon Street, Thinpankon Ward, Pyigyidagun Township, Mandalay, were also

arrested. Action was taken against them under Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic

Substances Law by the police station concerned.

Poppy plantation destroyed in Kengtung

10 Jan – A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit, the

drug-eradication organization of Jian Hong, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, People’s

Republic of China, Special Region-4 of Shan State (East), departments and local

people, acting on a tip-off, destroyed a five-acre poppy plantation at

Hway-namhin Village of Mongkai region, Kengtung Township on 22 December 2001.

Drug trafficker gets 25 years

Yangon, 10 Jan –

A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Tachilek

Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, searched the room No (13) of Ma

Arhone of No 2/50, Ponlot Street, Sangsai (A) Ward in Tachilek on 28 March 2001

evening and seized 99,700 stimulant tablets. Tachilek Police Station took action

against Ma Arhone, 20, daughter of U Hpone Te Hwa, under Section 15/19(A) of

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Tachilek District Court

sentenced her 25 years’ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on 28 December 2001.

Drug-traffickers sentenced

Yangon, 9 Jan –

A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Bago Special

Anti-drug Squad, acting on a tip-off, on 12 January 2001 searched a passenger

bus with number plates 9 Ka / 9596 at the toll gate in Bago and seized

passengers Maung Win and Tin Soe together with 2.65 kilos of marijuana. In

connection with the case, Bago Police Station-1 took action against Tin Soe, 50,

son of U Mya Thin of Nyaungaing Village in Phyu Township and Maung Win, 32, son

of U Ohn Maung of Wedaunt Village under section 15/19 (A)/ 21 of Narcotic Drugs

and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Bago District Court on 31 December

sentenced them to 3 years’ imprisonment each under section 15, and 15 years

imprisonment each under section 19 (A) to be served separately.

Drug trafficker sentenced

Jan-The Muse District Court handed down 16 years imprisonment under section 19 (

A) and 15 on a drug trafficker on 24-10-2001.

Trafficker Yan Einteh was caught together with 350 grams of

heroin in Muse on 5 May 2001. Members of local intelligence unit and specials

anti-drug squad found the heroin on him when they stopped his motorcycle and

searched him at 1 am in the town. Action was taken against Yan Einteh, 25, son

of U Kaung Hsa, of ward 3, Namphetka Village, Kutkai Township, under the

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrophic Substances Law.

140,000 stimulant tablets seized in Muse

Yangon,

2 Jan – The Muse District Court handed down a sentence of imprisonment on an

illicit drug trafficker on 20 November last year. A combined team comprising

members of local intelligence unit and Muse Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on

information, stopped and searched the car, Sunny pick-up, with the number plate

1Kha/2898 bound for Muse from Mutaung Village and seized 140,000 stimulant

tablets weighing 13.3 kilos at 6 pm on 11 March 2001. The Muse police station

took action against Aung Li (a) Kyauk Kyin Gan, at the wheels, 32, son of U

Kyauk Pi Chin, near the junction of Great Wall Lodging House Street, Ward 7,

Lashio, under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances

Law. The Muse District Court heard the case and sentenced him to 20 years in

prison under Section 19 (A).
