Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee and Secretary-1 of the
State Peace and Development Council told the conference that Myanmar is determined to bequeath a safe, healthy, beautiful and unpolluted environment to coming generations.

He said that the 30 Year Long-Term Plan for Education of Myanmar aims for the qualitative as well as quantitative development of education and transformation of Myanmar into a learning society and that one of the programmes in the Plan is concerned with the introduction of new disciplines and the encouragement of research that will be of direct benefit for the nation.

Among the new teaching programmes to be introduced, he said, is Environmental Studies. It will be conducted using a multi-disciplinary approach with participation from relevant disciplines of higher education institutions. The Chairman noted that in imparting environmental education, we must make sure to enhance awareness of the interdependence of environment and development; increase the level of knowledge and skills necessary, so that individuals are able to effectively manage the environment; and encourage a sense of responsibility towards the sustainable use of the earth’s natural resources.
