1,540.854 acres
of poppy fields destroyed in August
YANGON,
29 Aug – A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit, the
Tatmadaw and the Myanmar Police Force, in cooperation with local Shan nationals,
destroyed 10.25 acres of poppy fields near Lweput village, Hsihseng township,
Shan State (South), at estimated map references of (R-974583), (R988584) and
(S-013667) on 10 August.
Up to late August, a total of
453.382 acres of clandestindy-cultivated poppy plantations were destroyed in
southern Shan State during the 2002-2003 poppy cultivation season. As a whole,
the sown acreage of illegal poppy plantations destroyed all over Myanmar
totalled 1,540.854 (623,576 hectors).
