YANGON,

29 Feb – Taunggyi special anti-drug squad in cooperation with the local police

force and intelligence unit, acting on information, on 3 July 2003 searched the

house of Sai Tun Sar in Konkham Village, Hsihseng Township, and seized 5,800

stimulant tablets.

Local police station filed Sai

Tun Sar, son of U Maung Nyunt, Sai San, son of U Shwe Kyaung of the same village

and Sai Shwe Oo, son of U San Chone in Panglong Township, under section 15/ 19

(A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 22 December 2003

Taunggyi District Court sentenced 20 years’ imprisonment each to them under the

law.

Similarly, acting on a tip-off, a

combined team comprising members of Thaketa Township police force and local

intelligence unit on 19 February 2003 discovered 42.3882 g of marijuana from Myo

Zaw Tun and Maung Myo.

In connection with the case,

action was taken against Myo Zaw Tun, son of U Tin Tun, and Maung Myo, son U

Myat Thu, of Thaketa Township by the township Police Station under section 15/19

(A) of Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law.

On 26 January, 2004, District

Court handed down Myo Zaw Tun to 20 years’ imprisonment and Hla Myo to 25 years’

imprisonment under the law.

14 Feb – A combined team including members of local intelligence unit, Mandalay

Special Anti-drug Squad and No 9 Police Station, after a tip-off, searched a

suspect, Tun Tun, on 36th Street between 82nd and 83rd Streets in Yadana East

Ward, Maha Aung Myay Township, Mandalay, on 14 June 2003, and arrested him

together with 2.85 kilos of raw opium. In connection with the case, Mandalay No

8 Police Station took action against Tun Tun, son of U San Tun of 83rd Street in

Aung Myay Thazan Township under section 15/19(A) of Narcotic Drugs and

Psychotropic Substances Law. Mandalay District Court sentenced him to 25 years

in prison under section 19 (A) on 23 January 2004. Likewise, A combined team

including members of local intelligence unit and Bago Special Anti-drug Squad,

acting on information, searched a suspect, Maung Zaw, at Shwe Nadi Restaurant on

Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Yeni on 23 September 2003, and arrested him along

with 1.633 kilos of marijuana. In connection with the case, Myo Hla Police

Station took action against Maung Zaw, son of U Mya Khaing of Hayman Village

Thitkyein Village-tract, Lewe Township, under section 15/19(A) of Narcotic Drugs

and Psychotropic Substances Law. Taungoo District Court sentenced him to 15

years’ imprisonment under section 19 (A) and 4 years’ imprisonment under section

15 to serve separately on 1 January 2004.

Drug

4 Feb – A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and

the Criminal Investigation Department, acting on information, searched the house

of Moe Kyaw (a) Sony of Ward 3 in Hmawby on 16 May 2002. A total of 87.71 grams

of marijuana were seized there, but house owner Moe Kyaw was on the run. Later,

Hmawby Police Station filed a lawsuit against him under Sections 15/19(A)/23 of

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Further investigation into the

case led to the capture of Moe Kyaw, son of U Kyi, on 6 February 2003. The case

was later handed to Yangon North District Court, which handed down indefinite

imprisonment on him on 24 December 2003 under Sections 19(A)/23. In a similar

action, members of Hline Township Police Station, on a tip-off, searched the

house of Ma Khin Myat Myat Swe at Room-1204 of Parami Condominium, Ward 16,

Hline Township, on 12 May 2003. The authorities found Ma Khin Myat Myat Swe and

Tun Aung together with 348 stimulant tablets bearing letters ‘WY’ at the house.

Myat Myat Swe, daughter of U Ye Than Win, and Tun Aung, son of U Maung Tin of

Muse by the police station concerned under Sections 15/19(A)/21 of Narcotic

Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

On 12 December 2003, Yangon North District Court handed down 20 years’

imprisonment to Ma Khin Myat Myat Swe, and 25 years’ imprisonment to Tun Aung.
